Tutorial Eight: Assistive technology

Assistive technology can be defined as "any item, piece of equipment or product sytem where acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized that is used to increase or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities." (Cook and Hussey, 1995)

Go Talk 20+ board reads out voice messages and replays them to the client. They are $500 and a bit larger than a A4 piece of paper. They help clients to remeber certain things, such as recipes, and they also help clients to sequence tasks. It requires two AA batteries.

How to embed a Youtube video into your blog

How to make a digital photo badge:

Digital photo badges allow for various digital images to be arranged together into a shape. An array of images can fit into the badge. In order to make a badge I went onto the photo sharing website "Flickr" (http://www.flickr.com). Once logged into this website I uploaded the photos that I wanted on my badge. I saved these photos and then clicked on the tools tab. Once on the tools page, I clicked the slogan that said "Hey! Where's the badge?" I then had the option to choose a HTML badge or a flash badge. Once I chose the format I wanted I chose how many items I wanted on my flash badge, what size I wanted the badge to be and the orientation of the pictures. A preview was then showed and a copy of the HTML code was also provided. I then copied this code onto my blogger page and the badage appeared.

Tutorial Six: The internet and online communities

The online community that I investigated is Facebook. The web address of Facebook is www.facebook.com. The focus of this online community is to connect friends, work collegues, family etc. It is a social networking website.

There are various interactive tools that can be utilised on this website. Facebook allows for users to instantly message their friends or family who are online. Members are able to join different networks, upload photos, put messages on their friends profile and play games on Facebook. People are able to contribute to this online community by creating their own groups, joining different groups, updating their profile and writing about their thoughts and feelings.

People who join this online community are generally seeking social interaction and they want to reconnect with the important people in their lives. This community may give them a sense of belonging.

On Facebook personal information is generally shared. People are able to put up their personal information, photos, thoughts, feelings etc.

Ethical issues may arise on Facebook such as identity theif, safety and privacy issues may also arise. However Facebook aims to keep all of their members safe. Their are restrictions of Facebook such as children under the age of thirteen can not sign up to have a Facebook account. There is also a list of saftey tips that are avaible for all the members to view.

This community allows for people to socially interact regardless of how far away they are from each other. It is convient for users as they are able to talk to their love ones easily.

This online community however does not offer face to face human inteaction. The traditional communities did offer face to face interaction. It may be possible that Facebook users become isolated from the outside world, especially if they spend a large amount of time on the website.

Tutorial Four and Five: Video Production Part one and two

Youtube allows for users to upload and share various videos. Television programs, movies, music videos as well as home made movies can be shared on Youtube.

Storyboards display what is going to occur throughout the movie. Storyboarding is a very important process when it comes to planning a movie. It allows for the sequence of events to be clearly stated. This helps to ensure that the film is well constructed. Movie scripts are another tool that is used in the planning process. These state what each of the characters are going to say in the movie.

Our group planned the sequence of events before we filmed the movie. We discussed what each of our roles were going to be, and we had a practice before we filmed it. We did not need a script in our film because there was no talking in it. If our film was longer it would have been very useful to use storyboarding and scripting to help us plan our movie.
